The Homeschool Hornets Soccer program began in 1997 under the leadership of Fred McCloskey. Looking for a way for his sons to continue playing the game they enjoyed, he brought together several homeschool families to form a middle school team. He and his wife, Robin, made their own shirts, scrambled to find Christian schools who would play games against the team, and ran the concession stand. When the team found a field to practice on, Vance Filby volunteered to make goals out of PVC pipe. Many close relationships began to develop among the team's members and their families. Two years later a High School team was added, and Coach McCloskey was assisted by men like Rev. Randy Schurrs, Dan Zanol, and Chuck Shrump. The team became well-known for their good sportsmanship and close companionship
In 2004, Coach McCloskey stepped down, and the 2005 team was led by Harry and Janice Sanders and Chuck Shrump, with Gayle Stahlman taking over the concessions. Many of the graduates of the team, especially from the Zimmerman family, returned to help coach the team when available. This “reinvestment” of skills has continued to this day. Over the next several years the teams improved skills and became more competitive, with the high school team achieving some undefeated seasons. The handling of the concession stand transitioned to Becky Moyer.
In 2012, the Sanders stepped down from leading the team after their youngest son graduated. A core committee was established to make sure Hornets Soccer would continue, including Pastor Steve Carlson, Sue Corbin, Jodi Drilak, Fred McCloskey, Laura Miller, and Larry Shurr.
